History
Cambanora district is named after Cambanora Gap, which means “Peaceful Camping Ground” [1]. The district was formed in 1966 as one of the three original districts in the Darling Downs Area [1]. The original proposal was for the district to be named Wurtulla (South) district, however, by 1966 the name had been changed to Cambanora district [2]. Its first District Commissioner was Rupert Winwood-Smith [1]. It’s location was the South East Corner of Toowoomba, bounded by West St and Margaret St. In 1978, Cambanora District closed, and its groups were absorbed by Garraboo District and Steele Rudd District.
