History

Cavendish district is named after a prominent road in the area, Cavendish Road, which was named by a group who enjoyed the card game ‘whist’.  They were obviously well-addicted to this card game, and got together and played it, probably as people do today, and their ‘bible’ was a book called “Cavendish on Whist”, which I suppose they used to break up arguments, settle disputes, and they named Cavendish Rd after the book “Cavendish on Whist”.  The district was formed in 1961, out of Coorparoo district [1].  Its first District Commissioner was J. Mackay [2].  It was last mentioned in the Brisbane South Area directories in 1987 [3].
