History

John Joseph Oxley (1784-1828) was a surveyor-general and explorer who explored South East Queensland. With the assistance of some shipwrecked sailors he discovered and named the Brisbane River, the site of the city of Brisbane.  There is often interest in the location where he landed in Brisbane.  Later in 1824 Oxley, accompanied by Allan Cunningham returned to the Brisbane River and travelling further up, discovered the Bremer River.  In March 1952, the first moves were made to form John Oxley district [1].  The District Commissioner in 1955 was J. R. Lancaster [2].  In 1961, the number of groups in the district become too large, and the groups were split between John Oxley district and Tarcoola district [1].  The district was closed twice, once on the 4th September 2003, and the second time on the 1^st January 2012 [3], and re-opened again in 2017.
