History

Karunda is, most probably, a Tasmanian aboriginal word for “star” and it also represents the coming of the white man to the land where the stars shone brightly through the clear night sky [1, 2].

Karunda District was formed in 1960/61 (i.e., mentioned in the Branch Annual Report 1962/63, but not mentioned on Branch Annual Report 1958/59) and the first District Commissioner was V. L. Graydon [3, 4].  The district covered much of the old Brisbane South district.   In 1970, Karunda district closed and Groups transferred to Griffith District and Tarcoola District [5].
