Sheep, Pigs, Cattle, Wheat = Local industry is rural based, processing livestock and grain. The district has a high concentration of cattle feedlots, two abattoirs, a stockfeed manufacturer, grain trading and transport businesses.

History

The name of the district may be in recognition of the Koala population and number of Koala studies (i.e., Koala Habitat survey) carried out on the declining Koala population, and conservation efforts, in the Oakey area.  In some of the schools there were even Koalas in the schoolground (i.e., Acland State School, closed 2004).  In the 1997, there were also Koala monitoring and investigation studies at the Army Aviation Centre, Oakey.   There is also a Koala St in Oakey

Koala District was formed in 1967, when Oakey district closed. [1, 2].  The first District Commissioner (Acting) was F. R. Ballard [3].  In 1990, Koala district closed and with Garraboo district and Steele Rudd district combined to form Eastern Downs District [4].
