Pine Rivers District (Ext) a

Badge Description

The badge depicts a scene that was typical of country surrounding  Pine Rivers district in the early 1960s [4].  The river starts in the D’agular Range, near Mt O’Reilly, and flows through the Highlands down through the rich dairying area around Samford.  The area has abundant grasslands and gentle grassy slopes and valleys.  The South Pine River joins the North Pine River near Strathpine to form the Pine River, which flows into the sea in Bramble Bay, near the Hornibrook Highway.

History

In 1824, John Oxley, an explorer, collected samples of the Hoop Pines which were growing prolifically in the area.  Although there is no record of Oxley naming the Pine River anything other than the Deception River, given that he mistook Deception Bay for a river given its unusual shallowness, the former name was in popular usage by the early 1840s.

The first troop known to be registered in the Pine Rivers district locality was Sandgate Scout Group in Oct 1923.  However, it was known that some form of scouting existed in 1912, but no records are available.  In 1923, there were no formal districts, and groups were part of Brisbane Area [1].  Pine Rivers district was established in 1958 [2].  At the time, it consisted of Groups such as Sandgate, Bald Hills and Humpybong.  By 1951, Bald Hills Group left the district, and Boondal Group and Scarborough Group joined the district.  In 1953, Shorncliffe Sea Scout Group joined the district.  By 1958, Groups on the Redcliffe Peninsula decided to break-away from Pine Rivers District to form Peninsula District.  Additional Groups to join Pine Rivers district were Bramble Bay Group (1964) and Braken Ridge Group (1968) [2].  Dulendella and Pine Rivers district both closed in 1988 and combined to become Bramble Bay district [3].
