History

Redlands district is named after Redland Bay, which is named after the red colour of the fertile soil in the area.  The redness of Redland Bay soil derives from iron oxides present in lava from a volcano that erupted (millions of years ago) in northern New South Wales, some 100 kilometres to the south.  It was first formed in 1974 [1].  The original Redlands district closed, and was last mentioned in 1987 in the Brisbane South Area directories [2].  In 2014,  Moreton Bay district was renamed Redlands district when South Eastern Region was re-organised according to local city council boundaries.  Wynnum and Manly groups were moved to Fort Lytton District. With the re-distribution, the remaining five groups agreed to rename the district Redlands District as the groups were all within the Redlands city boundary [3].

Redlands district is also the home to Redlands Revue, a scout and guide gang show, which commenced in in December 1978 when 40 Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Leaders from Alexandra Hills, Birkdale and Cleveland Scout Groups joined with 30 Brownies, Guides, Ranger Guides and Leaders from Wellington Point, Cleveland, and Victoria Point Guide Districts to present three shows at the RSL Hall in Cleveland [4].  The show continues to perform each year.

The Charles S Snow Environment Centre, also named Eprapah, and is used for environmental education [5]. This centre resides at Victoria Point within Redlands district.  In 1985, the 1st Asia-Pacific Environmental Conservation Seminar was held at Eprapah.  63 delegates from six Asia-Pacific Nations and 5 Australian states attended a week long seminar.Topics focused on Australian wildlife; interesting the young in environmental conservation; the Asia-Pacific environment; and koala health and habitat.  Sessions were conducted by academics and experienced personnel employed in wild life and industrial occupations [6].  Prior to being used as an Environmental Centre, it was used as a leader training site until 1953 when Baden Powell Park, Samford was established.  The 1st Scoutmaster course held at Eprapah was in 1928.  Prior to this, Charles S Snow, one of the original founders of scouting in Queensland, had run the 1st course for Scoutmasters in Queensland out of Captain Louis Hope’s sugar mill, Ormiston, Redlands in 1924.
