History

Steele Rudd district was named in honour of the well-known local author Arthur Hoey Davis, who was born in 1868 at Drayton, the first township on the Darling Downs.  Davis had written skits about rowing for the Brisbane “Chronicle”, and signed his name as “Steele Rudder” (from the essayist Richard Steele, and the part of a boat).  This was later shortened to “Steele Rudd”.  His most famous work was “On our selection” [1].

Steele Rudd district was formed in 1966, and was one of the three original districts within the Darling Downs Area.  Its first District Commissioner was Alan Unger [2].  The original proposal was for the district to be named Gannon (West) district, however, by 1966 the name had been changed to Steele Rudd district [3].  In 1978, Cambanora District closed, and its groups are absorbed by Garraboo District and Steele Rudd District [4].  In 1990, Steele Rudd district closed and with Garraboo district and Koala district combined to form Eastern Downs District.
