History

Atherton Tablelands are named after John Atherton, a pioneering pastoralist, who was the first to find tin deposits in Northern Queensland.

From archival records, Tablelands district was in existence in the late 1950s, and mentioned in early scout magazines [1].  The District Commissioner in 1957 was V. R. Straughan [2].  Tablelands district was part of the Coral Coast Area in 1980 [3].  In 1999, some of the Tablelands district groups were absorbed into the new formed Tinaroo district.  Tablelands district closed in 1999 [4]
